Iolo Morganwg becoming a Unitarian

Postby Davin Raincloud » 28 Apr 2015, 08:09

According to wikpedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iolo_Morganwg
By 1799, he had become a Unitarian and he was the leading spirit when a Unitarian Association was formed in South Wales in 1802; it was he who drew up the Rheolau a Threfniadau of that body published in 1803.[1]
It's a silly irony I see in this, that the promoter of the 3 rays of Awen, joins a Group that is based on the rejection of the Christian 3 way emanation trinity. :yay:

Sorry, just had to share. I got a little smile from that :)

:awen:

most sweet the sight of the sun;
good is health if one can but keep it,
and to live a life without shame. (Havamal 68)

That's exactly what the word Unitarian means - that God is one united person rather than a trinity.

Yes, Exactly what Wafflebox said.

It's also important to realise there is a difference between a Unitarian Congregation, and a Unitarian Universalist Congregation (that's popular in the US).

Unitarians aren't necessarily very Universal on their own.

Yes, he must have been theologically unitarian. The modern religious liberal movement inherited the name, but might embrace any theological position, and came after Iolo's time (note: the name "Unitarian Universalist" arose in the US (I think) and the corresponding British congregations simply refer to themselves as "Unitarian")
But there is an interesting connection to Universalism through George Watson MacGregor Reed, who founded the Ancient Druid Order into which Ross Nichols was initiated. So it's it there in our modern druidic roots. :)
