The Everchanging Divine

Postby Aphritha » 22 Apr 2014, 21:26

When researching deities, it is quite common to see them depicted in the height of the culture in which they were popular, for obvious reasons. Reconstructionists try to imitate to the best of their ability what their original worship may have been like. However, many centuries have flown by since those times. Now, if you stop to consider how much a human being would change in all those years if they were immortal, why wouldn't it be the same for a god or goddess? I see the Catholics have appointed St. Isidore to handle the internet and computers. Why couldn't similar happen in other pantheons?
For the sake of fun, suppose for a moment that a god/dess is real. What modern things do you think they'd go for? Which ones would they oppose? What about children? What new deities would be born? How would their myths change, and what new ones might be created?

Ahhh I think you need to read Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" :D
http://www.neilgaiman.com/works/Books/American+Gods/

For me Loki/Loca is the god of digital technology aka computers, the web etc... and is thus the patron of my work.
After all what other gods has delivered so much to his fellow gods (Thor's hammer, Odin's steed, etc...) but was still vilified and outcast by them (you'll know what I mean if you've ever watched the I.T. Crowd)
Most dear is fire to the sons of men,
most sweet the sight of the sun;
good is health if one can but keep it,
and to live a life without shame. (Havamal 68)

Would Cerridwen be an astronaut? or perhaps an astronomer going nuts in the high Atacama desert.

How would Herne the Hunter fill in his application for a hunting license?
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way on.

Would Terminus be worshipped in end-of-line railway stations?
For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him. For he is of the tribe of Tiger. Christopher Smart

:-) That one made me giggle... I wonder how that'd go over.

Actually, Herne might be better off spending the hunting season in his man cave with a stack of Chuck Norris videos

Yes, I think finding a good pizza delivery place qualifies as hunting these days. :)
