Loo-Roll/Toilet-Paper

Postby BCPantheist » 18 Apr 2016, 05:29

So, a totally-random question that has nothing to do with anything:

Assuming you have it wall-mounted, does your loo-roll unravel toward the wall, or away from it?

For me, it's away from the wall...

since there are walls on both sides of my toilet, it always unravels toward a wall ;)

According to the original patent drawing for perforated toilet rolls in 1891, the end of the roll should be away from the wall. This is of course entirely logical as the alternative would result in the scraping of knuckles on the wall and the inevitable gathering of germs. This apparently does not bother many and the average American spends half an hour every year looking for the end of the roll. International standardisation of toilet roll hanging would save America at least $300 million in lost productivity. However, the alternative of having the end against the wall ensures that the roll is less likely to unravel during an earthquake and there is less chance of a kitten or advertising puppy unraveling the roll. While unsubstantiated, there is a view that women prefer the roll end against the wall and men away from the wall; this may relate to the again unsubstantiated view that those who pull toilet paper from the bottom of the roll are more intelligent than those who pull it from the top. Fortunately this issue has been solved by the invention in 1996 of the "Tilt-a-roll" which allows the toilet roll to be turned so that the end can face to or away from the wall at the user's discretion thereby saving many marriages. The Wikipedia discussion page for toilet roll orientation is twice as long as that for the Iraq War.

It is assessed that it takes 384 trees to make the toilet paper that one person uses in a lifetime. Consideration of alternatives is therefore important which include a bidet, the family cloth, an old sock, a sponge on a stick, a dried corn cob, pine needles and of course not forgetting the humble dock leaf.

Sometimes I think I must give up the internet and get a life!

It is an indisputable fact that no one every looks at the toilet paper holder before sitting and making an offering . Hence the traditional rite closing chant “Aaaaargh nooooooo paaaaapeeer”!

I'm originally from the south of England. I married my Northern Husband. Not only is the way the toilet paper positioned a constant source of disagreement in our house (I'm firmly team 'away from the wall'), so are the regional names of practically everything, and the foods we eat.

Hehe, all happy banter though. May there be peace indeed! :shake:

I just keep the roll on a nail on the back of the door, about knee height so I can rest a book on it, so my roll is perpendicular to the initial assumption. I have a radio on one wall and a small shelf for my tea mug on yhe other so there is no room for paper by the bog. I sometimes rest my pipe on the shelf as well so I don't really want flammable paper next to it.

I once heard about a couple who had two toilet roll holders - so they could each have what they wanted. Try it! :-)

I'm also 'away from the wall'.

We're lazy in this house...we set the roll on the sink. Sometimes the cats knock it down, and it will rest either in the basin(possibly getting wet), or on the floor.

In my younger days. I spent most all the time I could, in the forests of Northern Canada, Now back then we couldn't always supply ourselves with the necessities of life, such as what we are talking about, It was then that Mother Nature intervened, and supplied us with the tools required to complete the job, as it were. Thus, with necessity being the Mother of invention, tree material was used in [LOO] of the standard material, thus giving rise to the terminology, [Loo's Leaf Paper]. Caution was needed so one was not apt to grab the poison Oak, which left more than a, mental impression on your soul for some time to come. Now in the advanced stages of my life, whether it falls away from, or towards the wall, is of no concern to me, as long as it is there, when Nature Calls. Amazing how we can be away from Nature for so long, but still have to answer her call. WITH RESPECT FOR ALL. BEACH AND BEAR.

I have been concerned by this discusion over toilet tissue, as the roll in our Wharepaku or Tutaewhare sits jamned squarely on the cistern tap.
I dont know if it was me or my partner who first stuck it there.
I could buy a roll holder from the hardware store opening a new dilemma suction cup mounted? It may not stick to the paint or screws which would require finding a drill and a screwdriver.
So for the foreseeable future the roll will remain at 90 degrees to the wall..

If
I'm living alone, it's away from the wall. Otherwise, please, as long as it's there! Nothing irks me more than no tissue in the loo when I need it (or not enough of it on the roll) .
