These are so beautiful and inspiring, thanks for posting! I bought a new camera about a month ago but haven't had time to play with it because the new semester started. But now I might try to make some time for it.

Can I ask you what camera you are using, since we have quite similar interests and styles (although I don't have your skill).

I use a Canon 450D and a 7D with a 60mm macro lens, a 10-20mm wide angle, an 8mm fisheye, a 50mm prime lens and a 55-250mm tele. Probably not much for a professional photographer. :)
Generally I prefer SLR's with optical viewfinders. Maybe I'm just a bit old-fashioned but I like the "direct" contact to the scene rather than having a screen in between.
What kind of camera do you fancy?

Labyrinth at Lughnasadh!
Actually this is a panorama, stitched together from three fisheye-images! The camera was 3.5m above ground on top of a fully expanded tripod which I held over my head. :)

I've been eying the 450D a few times actually. But now it's no longer on the market. The EOS-range has my interest though.

Most of my camera's have come my way as a gift or cast-of by someone else. I've been using a Fuji Finepix s9000 for a long time, quirky bugger, lots of noise in lower light if you weren't careful, but I loved it for its speed (at the time). I've also got a old little samsung compact with leica innards from about 12 years back. Both are currently at the absolute end of their lifespan. Sometimes I put a film in my old minolta's, just for the heck of it. Mostly, I'm reduced to using my Iphone now

I'm currently torn between a higher-end compact like the Samsung EX2 (easy to take with me everywhere) and a bigger but better Canon EOS. Probably would start out with just one "all purpose" lense and then build from that since funds are limited.

It really depends, what your are looking for - a small camera to carry with you everywhere or if you focus on better image quality and a nicer photography experience. :)

Most professionals use a Nikon or Canon as their "workhorse". For these brands there are a wide variety of lenses available for almost every purpose. You can start with a cheap kit-objective and add a macro, a tele or whatever your budget allows later on step by step.

When I take a picture of let's say, a flower. The first shot is normally a good base to start with but not yet the optimum. Then I start playing around with the point of view, focus, aperture and other camera settings. So to me it's very important to have direct access to all of these settings, without fiddling with overloaded menus or a zoom controlled by a button!

Outstanding images often have nice blurry backgrounds or lovely bokehs. Unfortunately you can't get this from a phone-camera or most compact cameras because of their small sensor chips in combination with a too small aperture. On the other hand, pocket cameras offer a good depth of field.

Ok, it all depends on your budget. But if you can afford a nice SLR (like a three-digit EOS or better), you won't be disappointed!
