Forum Tech Problems - Nontech solutions for getting round

Postby Michael C. Page » 28 Oct 2017, 14:22

Hello folks - I hope this posts - It's h * t or miss

You may have noticed problems with this forum. I am not IT, but I have discovered some "Laypersons Operator" solutions that seems to sort of work...well...for now.

Error Messages: When posting or going from post to post you may have gotten error messages. The solution: Just click the back button on the top left of screen - That takes you back to where you were - Then click the SUBMIT Button again, if POSTING ( or click whatever Forum Link you tried before if going from place to place). Then walk about your home and do other things for a bit while the "spinning wheel of death" decides what will randomly happen.

If an error message pops up again, then repeat once - It usually works then. :wow: If not, do this:
1) Log out by clicking on "Delete all Board Cookies" (At bottom right of screen)
2) Close out of all windows except your Browser (google, foxfire, edge etc.)
3) Clear your Browser's cache (History, passwords, etc)
4) restart and go back and give it the good ol' college try. This usually works...

Yes it's a pain in the Bum! Hopefully this to shall pass. Salute to our techy admin who are now engaging with this problem. (PS I would salute but the extra emoticon page ....has an error. so I'll just wave. :hiya: )

Haven't had error messages - so far - but I have noticed over the past few days that the board seems reluctant to load. When I navigate to a different forum/sub-forum, or click on a post, it takes ages with the little whirling icon on my browser. I was wondering if its my internet, but I seem to be able to access other sites fairly quickly, and your post Michael seems to indicate that the Board has got some over-fed gremlins in the pipework.

Yes, no error messages but sometimes very slow . Could be cos some of the monoliths are really heavy to move around and the admins need some energy sending.

I think the database has run out of space, at the weekend I will do some housekeeping.

Congrats for the smooth update! I know what it means to update a forum this size! This summer we spent four weeks until our old vBulletin-forum was upgraded and running smoothly again!

Here I just noticed an old bug coming back. When you try to post a picture with the IMG - BB-Code, the following message appears:
"It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct."
Luckily the old workaround still does the trick using the "pix=" BB-Code instead.

Do you also plan to change to TLS encryption?

A couple of bugs I've noticed: I can't see anybody's avatar (including my own), and none of the smilies are working. I'm sure the admin team are on top of it already

On the plus side, performance is better, threads are loading much faster, and there's no lag when replying to a past :applause:

I have the same problem. Good to know, it's not my slow internet connection ;)

Me too, didn't want to sound impatient...was just glad it wasn't my computer/internet (had some internet problems this year and got a new router). ;)

Alwin, have you tried loading your photos as an attachment? (Tab below message box.) That's the only way I've been able to upload images for a long time.

The images are hosted on my own webspace an not uploaded as an attachment. Normally it's possible to include an image with the IMG-Tag like described here:
app.php/help/bbcode#f5r0
But unfortunately phpBB must have recycled old buggy code from previous versions so they reintroduced an old bug that was already fixed in the last version! To post an image now hosted on a remote place you have to use:

Code: Select all

[pix=]Link to the image[/pix] instead of: [img]Link to the image[/img]

Thanks, Alwin. Seems the IT folks added a redirect on our forum URL to refer back to a previous server. It fixed the issues with avatars and smilies, but is perhaps why the image codes work differently. Maybe?

I guess it's an older problem. It seems to have something to do with the php-version used:
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... #p14409801
and the interaction between photoshop an phpBB:
https://github.com/marc1706/fast-image-size/issues/34

But the workaround with the "pix="-command works fine for me.
