Irish Translation Web Site

Postby eilis » 05 Feb 2009, 22:29

I know more than one person has posted a good web site for Irish Translations but darned if I can find it among all the posts! But which translation site is the best?

I'm looking for a translation of Red Wolf into Irish Gaelic

I found >>wolf<<
TRANSLATION:
wolf = n mac tíre m1
wolf = faolchú m4

and >>red<<
TRANSLATION:
red = n dearg m1
red = Cumannaí m4
red = adj dearg
red = rua

http://www.englishirishdictionary.com/dictionary

So now how do I put it together? rua mac tíre
And is it pronounced differently that it looks?

This is a character in a fictional creative writing piece I am putting together right now involving native Americans and Irish Immigrants to the US.

Hey, Eilis.

I just started to learn Irish some months ago, and I'm doing it only by book, unfortunately not with a teacher. But as far as I know - but don't take me for granted - You would have to put the words in another order:
mac tíre rua (by the way: I didn't know these words, except dearg, which I've just come to learn! mac tíre seems to mean something like "son of the land" - but I am an absolute beginner!)

rua, my dictionary says is what is called red-brown in German, dearg is just red.

If I find something, I'll tell You.

Wait, You asked about the pronunciation.
Again, as far as I know ...
mac isjust mac, but with an "a" as in "dark" without the "r".
tíre like chee-ra
rua like roo-a
dearg, if You'd need it, like: je-rag, first syllable as in "Jeff".

I'll warn You again: That's just book-knowledge.

Thanks - what you said confirms what I have learned from other sources. The pronunciation was especially helpful. I can never keep that straight!
