Nine little waves & Brighid ?

Postby D'Arzhur » 30 Jul 2009, 18:47

Hello :)
I am looking for information about the origin of this poem of blessings and whether it can be attributed to Brighida (as Goddess or Saint)...I would like to read it during a christening ceremony and it is important for me to be able to justify my choice to the other guests as well as the priest (it will be in a dutch catholic church)...
So all information as well as the text (I have different versions ?) would be welcome !
If this is not at all the right forum I do apologise :)
Thank you :)

I think it's in the Carmina Gadelica collection.

Carmina Gadelica 217

The little drop of the Father
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

The little drop of the Son
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

The little drop of the Spirit
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

To aid thee from the fays,
To guard thee from the host;

To aid thee from the gnome,
To shield thee from the Spectre;

To keep thee for the Three,
To shield thee, to surround thee;

To save thee for the Three,
To fill thee with the graces;

The little drop of the Three
To lave thee with the graces

A wavelet for thy form,
A wavelet for thy voice,
A wavelet for thy sweet speech;

A wavelet for thy luck,
A wavelet for thy good,
A wavelet for thy health;

A wavelet for thy throat,
A wavelet for thy pluck,
A wavelet for thy graciousness;
A wavelet for thy graciousness.

Carmina Gadelica 219

The little wavelet for thy form,
The little wavelet for thy voice,
The little wavelet for thy sweet speech.

The little wavelet for thy means,
The little wavelet for thy generosity,
The little wavelet for thy appetite.

The little wavelet for thy wealth,
The little wavelet for thy life,
The little wavelet for thy health.

Nine waves of grace to thee,
The waves of the Physician of thy salvation.

A little palmful for thy form,
A little palmful for thy voice,
A little palmful for thy sweet speech.

A little palmful for thy eating,
A little palmful for thy taking,
A little palmful for thy vigour.

A little palmful of the Father,
A little palmful of the Son,
A little palmful of the Spirit.

Nine little palmfuls for thy grace
(In the name of) the Three in One.

Carmina Gadelica 220

In the name of God,
In the name of Jesus,
In the name of Spirit,
The perfect Three of power.

The little drop of the Father
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

The little drop of the Son
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

The little drop of the Spirit
On thy little forehead, beloved one.

To aid thee, to guard thee,
To shield thee, to surround thee.

To keep thee from the fays,
To shield thee from the host.

To sain thee from the gnome,
To deliver thee from the spectre.

The little drop of the Three
To shield thee from the sorrow.

The little drop of the Three
To fill thee with Their pleasantness.

The little drop of the Three
To fill thee with Their virtue.

O the little drop of the Three
To fill thee with Their virtue.

Thank you so much Llwynoges for taking the time to post all this :hug:
It does give me different options about the text !
Is there a direct tie to Brighid ? I read (in one of the gwersi) that this blessing was used when St Brighid was born...
I have been asked by the mother of the child to state what St Brighid stands for as all she could find (locally) is that St Brighid is the patron of the farm animals....I am of course more aware of the Goddess Brighid "talents" so any info is appreciated :)
