song in cornish:arloedhes marya

Postby wyeuro » 15 Sep 2010, 02:56

gorhemmynadow, pub den oll! :hiya:
cornish is easy to learn. here is some i wrote. it's a translation of an old song which has come down to us in english (lady mary), but it sort of 'feels' cornish to me so at last i got audacious enough to have a go. the literal translation is below it and below that, a link to the traditional english version of the song:

Arloedhes Marya

Ev a dheuth dhe dharas ow chi
dhiworth y balys brav.
Skant lavar, mes y ovis -
ogh, gortos bys vykken a wra!
Golok y dhewlagas dryst
moy guv es ol y lavar!
Mes mann ny en vy dhodho
hag ev genev vy puptra.

A owrlin ha las hy gon,
a’y sav yn hy lowarth hi:
Arloedhes Marya orwir!
Ny ganso le mann dhedhi.
Ow bos benyn bries dhodho
ow mynnes y hwodhya yn ta!
Mes mann ny en vy dho dho
hag ev genev vy puptra.

Yma ev yn y balys brav
war y weli bleujyowek ha teg.
Deges y dhewlagas guv,
dryst y enep ha hweg.
Yn mysk an gynoryon oll
prag y talav dhe gyni betha?
Rag mann ny en vy dho dho
hag ev genev vy puptra.

the tune is lovely. i couldn't find one on-line so i'll try to get up enough courage to post an mp3 i made of it on the bardic forum. it's a bit rough and ready  here's a literal translation:

Lady Mary

‘He came to my cottage door
from his fine palace.
Few words, but his glance –
oh, it will stay for ever!
The look of his sad eyes
kinder than all his words!
But nothing was I to him
and he was everything to me!’

Of silk and lace her gown,
she stands in her garden:
weird Lady Mary
She has no place with him.
‘To be a bride to him
I wished it, he well knew!
But nothing was I to him
and he was everything to me.

There he is in his fine palace
on his beautiful flowery bed.
Closed his kindly eyes,
sad his face and kindly.
‘Among the keeners all
why should i presume to keen?
For nothing was I to him
and he was everything to me.

i've checked it pretty carefully but there may be small errors in it. if anyone can help me with corrections i'll be truly grateful
