Maybe you have already seen this Science article: Belowground carbon trade among tall trees in a temperate forest
Scientists found that adult trees share significant amounts of carbon with their neighbours over a huge network of mycorrhiza fungi.

"Forest is more than the sum of its trees!"
This idea seems to be quite new to scientists. :)
