There is something I have found works well, although there are people who haven't thought to try it.
I don't just meditate and reject ideas, nor do I just read, while doing meditation as something completely separate.
Instead, I use what I read to try to see things in my meditation, and I notice things in my meditation and use that to interpret what I am reading. Thus, I go back and forth between meditation and reading, using each to slowly improve my understanding of the other. Since magic is a variety of meditation, this applies to that as well.
