Links of Interest, Writer's Magazines
http://www.cwj.ca/
Clipped from site: Dedicated apprentice and professional writers use the information they find in Canadian Writer's Journal to acquire the edge they use on their way to publication. Many first-time writers got their start in the Canadian Writer's Journal because we are looking for terrific material, not reputation. We are not on news stands; we are in a growing number of libraries across the country, so finding a copy is possible.

The 2009 Poet’s Market is the key to getting your work published! It helps define and direct your efforts with listings for more than 1,800 book, journal and magazine publishers and editors. Clipped from site: The most recent edition of Light's List of Literary Magazines was for 2007. It was published by Bluechrome and I have heard that it is now out of print but have so far been unable to get confirmation of this from Bluechrome. A 2008 edition was planned by Bluechrome but never commissioned. Whether I shall resume publication myself I have not yet decided. If I do it will be announced here and in various independent press magazines.
If you do wish to try to obtain a copy of the 2007 edition, the details are below.
NOTE: Not all listings have been up to date in past. However, some journals found here may not be found else where.

Clipped from site: The Directory of Poetry Publishers is a must for poets, librarians and critics. It features some 21 pieces of information on each of the more than 1,800 book and magazine publishers of poetry worldwide -- including university presses and e-zines. Because of this breadth of coverage it has been called "simply indispensable!" by Choice and "invaluable" by Booklist.

Links of Interest, Software
http://www.openoffice.org/ - Free (LGPL)
An open-source, multi-platform office suite with the ability to open most basic document formats. (I.e. it will open Word files, I think it will try to open access databases, but it will fail to open Project or other specialist formats.) Unlike some other open-source projects, this one is actually supported by some big industry names (specifically Sun Microsystems of Java fame) and built for commercial use.
It exports to a few useful formats like PDF and HTML by default and the default (Open Document) format itself is basically a collection of zipped XML files for you tech-heads.
http://www.writerscafe.co.uk/ - Free 'Demonstration' version, $45 full version (download) or $65 full version (on CD)
A multi-platform suite of writer's tools to help with the creative process. It has storyline tools (time-line based), scrap-booking / cork-board functionality for brain-storming and even a card-game for batting writer's block. The demonstration version is useful, especially for working out what it does, but it does limit certain useful functions. You are limited to a handful of concurrent story-lines, for instance. This is not crippling, but it is enough of a niggle to make you want the full version.

I use both, but the Writer's Cafe I have is the trial version. I really should upgrade, but I haven't got around to it...

I like this program (Supernotecard). It is only $29 and you get free updates.

That being said... I don't use it much. I like to write in notebooks and then type out big chunks...

Links of Interest: Fantasy World Creation
It's challenging to build a whole world, whether you want to write fantasy or science fiction. It's so easy to delineate too little, and have your world look cardboardy and incomplete, or to get bogged down in details to the extent that you never actually have time to start your story. These are some of the very best sites I've come across:
Magical World Builder
Very thoughtful articles with all the detail you need to get started, and lots of food for more imagination. There's even a workshop to help you sketch your world out from start to finish in 30 days, 15 minutes a day. Gives much to build on in a coherent fashion.

Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions by Patricia C. Wrede
One of my favourite sites, perhaps my actual favourite. Intelligent and elegant. In the form of questions - work on the ones you feel are relevant to your world.
http://www.sfwa.org/writing/worldbuilding2.htm
Creating an Earthlike Planet
Particularly useful for its inclusion of some details other more culturally-oriented methods miss out on.
