HANDY TIP:

People whose surname is Toblerone should always take along an empty 'Toblerone' chocolate box when attending interviews for office jobs. This would save your potential employer the expense of having to make a name plaque for your desk, and therefore increase your chances of getting the job.

Correct in all aspects.

The answer to your 'intelligent' question, Twig:
Right next to the 'post reply' button, at the top of the page, after the 'page 24 or 24', it says: [ 470 posts ]

Of course, since I replied, the number of posts will have changed.

Since when did Ghostie change his skin colour to BLUE???

And what does it have to do with fascism - you lost me there. Must be a cultural thing, I am also lost bout the VIZ(???) reference.... Anyone care to clarify?

Morning, Aylyn.

Ghostie went blue as a consequence of certain related discussions in the Reading Room and Discuss Druidry. I don't want to advertise it, but if you go looking you will surely find it.

VIZ is a British comic. I think it is still going, but if it is, it is way past it's heyday. They used to have a bogus letters page which was so funny [My husband mistook Paraquat for milk the other day while making our tea. We were both sick as dogs, but we soon saw the fungicide.] and a Useful Tips section with all sorts of ridiculous suggestions like the one above from Wintersundog.

And these:

RECREATE the danger of a parachute jump in safety by visiting Google Earth and clicking the scroll bar until you reach the ground. Add realism to the exercise by putting a fan on blowing full in your face.

FEEL a bit like God for the day by making some little people out of plasticine, and then judging them harshly.

Spoonerise Rolf Harris's name. Hey Presto! You're saying it in a dog's voice. [ :-) :-) ]

KIDS. Threading a piece of string through a ping pong ball and painting it brown is ideal for a fun game of conkers that conforms with the 1974 Health & Safety Act, section 52, paragraph c.

HOUSEWIVES. Make the normally mundane task of switching the central heating on a little more exciting by singing 'The heating's on' to the tune of 80s hit The Heat is On by Glen Frey as you are doing it.

And so on and so forth. I suppose it parodies the 'newspapers' we grew up with as kids. Sunday People? News of the World? Do they still have those? And magazines like Titbits and Weekend? Dreadful stuff.

Anyway, I hope that clarifies. :D

Twig! Hi there, darling. Your photos are coming through fine, and I am loving seeing you and yours. XXX

"See you next week..." sang the Double Deckers at the end of episode 17 of the popular children's TV show, aired on 30th April 1971. Thirty-six years later we are still waiting. First the Blue Peter debacle, now this. Are there no lengths to which the BBC will not go to mislead its younger viewers?

I've just seen the flooded state of Gloucester on the telly. I've been boycotting the place for years for just this reason. All the smart-arses who mocked me and made up stupid rhymes about me are laughing on the other side of their faces now.
Dr Foster, Cheltenham

I learned with interest this week that the term 'inflammable' does not in fact mean that something is not flammable. The word does not follow the same negative rule as other words prefixed 'in', such as inaudible, insatiable, indiscreet, etc. I also burnt my arse cheeks quite badly.

How ridiculous of NASA spending billions of pounds to come up with the non-stick frying pan. In the weightlessness of space, the astronauts' sausages are just going to float right out of the pan. If anything, they should have been developing something to make them stick.
J Boxbury, Norfolk

My teachers told me I would never make anything of myself if I sat staring into space during lessons. However, I had the last laugh as I am now the Astronomer Royal.

"She can dish it out, but she cannot take it", I once heard someone say of me. And it's true - I'm a school dinner lady and I'm allergic to mashed potatoes.

Yeah, I read a few of those and decided to stay out of the discussion - it would only have put oil in the fire, as I cannot stand fascism either. Comes from being German, I guess.... However, I was unaware that it had changed Ghosties Skin Colour to blue, and I must admit I hate the smurfs - annoying little critters that are best stepped on...

Thanks for the VIZ update, it definitely IS a cultural gap. But I liked the quotes, even though it took me a while to understand them.

Haha. Yes, it is very culturally specific.

What is funny in Germany, then?

And I thought it was widely known that Germans are utterly humourless :-)

Honestly, I cannot cite things, as usual jokes elude me when I want to remember them, but maybe some other Germans can illuminate this...

Are Smurfs a Dutch invention? No wonder they are so annoying... :duck:
